Recent research reveals a startling capability of GPT-4: its ability to convincingly sway human opinions in debates. The study, conducted by researchers across multiple institutions, pitted 900 participants against either a human or GPT-4 in one-on-one debates. A key finding was the significant impact of personal data. When GPT-4 had access to basic demographic information—age, job, political leaning, etc.—its persuasiveness dramatically increased.

Specifically, the AI was 64.4% more persuasive than human debaters when provided with this information. Without personal details, its performance was comparable to humans. However, with personalized arguments, GPT-4's effectiveness surged, improving its chance of changing someone's mind by a remarkable 81.2% compared to human-human debates. This highlights the potential for misuse, particularly concerning misinformation and manipulation.

Ethical Implications and Future Considerations

The researchers emphasized the serious implications of this finding, noting the potential for malicious use of LLMs in spreading propaganda and reinforcing echo chambers. While GPT-4 struggled with strongly held beliefs, its success in less controversial topics is still concerning.
