AltStore Expansion

AltStore Expanding Globally & Embracing the Fediverse for iPhone Apps

Mobile Apps

Okay, so here's the scoop: AltStore PAL, one of the first alternative app stores for iPhones in the EU, is spreading its wings! I'm hearing that the developer, Riley Testut, announced they're planning to launch in Japan, Brazil, and Australia before the year ends. The UK? They're aiming for 2026.

Apparently, expanding to more countries is the number one request they've been getting. They're still waiting on Apple for the green light on timing, though. But, big news: AltStore is diving headfirst into the fediverse, using the ActivityPub protocol to link apps, updates, and news to the open social web. This is interesting because it could really change how we interact with apps and their communities.

Imagine being able to comment on an app on Mastodon or like a news update on Threads, and then seeing all those interactions right inside AltStore. That's the vision! To make this happen, each AltStore source will have its own ActivityPub account, which you can follow from any social web account. You will be able to engage with content, and these interactions will be visible within AltStore. It's like bringing the social web directly into your app store experience.

They're even working with Mastodon gGmbH to manage a custom Mastodon server and with A New Social to support Bluesky using the Bridgy Fed tool. These fediverse features should be hitting AltStore PAL in the coming months.

Here's a thought: This could be a game-changer for smaller developers. It would give them a direct line to their users and build a community around their apps. I also think it empowers users, giving them more control over their app experience.

And that's not all! AltStore is also getting a $6 million investment from Pace Capital. This means they can hire more people and get the resources they need to finish the fediverse integration and launch AltStore worldwide. Chris Paik from Pace Capital and Mike McCue, the CEO of Flipboard, are even joining AltStore's board. It looks like the future is bright for this alternative app store.
