Apple Releases New Dedicated Games App

Software

Apple is introducing a revamped gaming experience with its new, dedicated Games app, pre-installed on iPhones, iPads, and Macs running iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 this fall. This represents a significant update to the long-neglected Game Center, offering a more modern approach akin to established gaming hubs like Xbox or GOG Galaxy.

Enhanced Gaming Features

The new Games app will centralize various functionalities. Users can access leaderboards, matchmaking services, game recommendations, news, and direct access to Apple Arcade. A key feature allows users to see what their friends are playing and issue challenges within specific games. The app’s library will conveniently list all games ever downloaded from the App Store, providing easy launch access.

Mac users will benefit from a unique overlay feature integrated within the Games app, providing readily available access to communication tools, audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity status, and battery level information. This multitasking capability aims to improve the user experience during gameplay.

Apple's Growing Gaming Ambitions

Apples recent efforts to bolster its gaming presence extend beyond this new app. The company has actively supported the release of AAA titles such as Resident Evil Village and the Hitman World of Assassination trilogy on its mobile and Mac platforms. The addition of the Hitman trilogy highlights Apples ongoing investment in bringing high-quality gaming experiences to its devices.

Despite ongoing legal battles with Epic Games, Apple continues to evolve its gaming ecosystem. With Fortnite's return to the App Store and the introduction of third-party payment options, the company appears focused on moving forward. The recent acquisition of the two-person studio RAC7, the developers of Sneaky Sasquatch, also indicates Apples' commitment to expanding its portfolio of games.
