ChatGPT Atlas: Should You Switch to an AI-Powered Browser?

AI

So, OpenAI just dropped ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser. I must admit I raised an eyebrow. Is it time to break up with Safari? That's the million-dollar question, right?

It's easy to get caught up in the hype, but history teaches us something. We've seen companies try to dethrone the big browsers like Chrome and Safari, but it's incredibly hard to make a profit solely from a browser. People are used to free stuff, you know? However, OpenAI is sitting on a mountain of cash, so the rules might be different for them.

Now, I haven't personally jumped on the AI browser bandwagon. But I've heard experiences that are… well, let's just say mixed. It sounds like, at best, you get a slight boost in efficiency. Sometimes, you end up watching the AI agent stumble around on a website, and I wonder if that's really what people need.

And honestly, security is a concern. Giving an AI access to your browsing history and passwords? That requires a lot of trust. Also, what happens to the open web if these AI interfaces become dominant? Will websites matter less? It's a thought that gives me pause.

One of the problems I see is that there's a disconnect between the tech being built and what regular people actually want. The recipe-to-Instacart example everyone uses? I don't know anyone who does that! Are we building solutions for problems that don't really exist?

Maybe I'm an old-school browser, but I still find myself digging through web pages, using good old Boolean searches. It works for me! If Google ever kills Boolean search, maybe I'll try one of these AI browsers. But until then, I'm sticking with what I know. It's all about what best fits your needs.
