Discord Launches New In-App Currency
Discord is introducing a new in-app currency, Discord Orbs, currently in beta testing with a select group of users. This virtual currency allows users to acquire digital items within the Discord Shop. The innovative aspect lies in how Orbs are earned: users complete promotional Quests, interacting with advertiser content such as watching videos or streaming specific games to friends.
Earning and Spending Orbs
Participating in these Quests, which often involve engagement with brand advertisements, directly rewards users with Orbs. These Orbs can then be exchanged for a range of items in the Discord Shop, including standard items and exclusive rewards. Exclusive offerings might include unique badges or temporary access to Discord Nitro, the platform's subscription service. This system provides a new revenue stream for Discord while offering users tangible benefits for their engagement.
A Shift in Promotional Rewards
Previously, brands and publishers offering Quests provided their own rewards. While this remains an option, the introduction of Orbs presents a standardized and unified reward system. This simplifies the process for both advertisers and users, creating a more streamlined experience within the Discord ecosystem. The global rollout to a wider user base is planned following the beta testing phase.
