Google has expanded access to Project Mariner, its experimental AI agent designed to interact with websites on behalf of users. Initially launched in late 2024, this innovative tool allows users to delegate online tasks, such as purchasing tickets or groceries, through a simple chat interface. The AI agent handles the website navigation and interaction, eliminating the need for direct user engagement with third-party sites.

Significant Improvements

A major update to Project Mariner now enables it to manage up to ten tasks concurrently. This enhanced functionality is a significant leap from the previous version, which operated within the user's browser, limiting the user's ability to perform other tasks simultaneously. The new cloud-based architecture allows Project Mariner to run on virtual machines, offering a vastly improved user experience.

Accessibility and Future Integrations

Access to Project Mariner is currently available to subscribers of Google's premium AI Ultra plan ($249.99/month) in the U.S., with plans for international expansion. Moreover, integration with the Gemini API and Vertex AI will empower developers to build applications leveraging Mariner's capabilities. Future plans include integrating Project Mariner into Google Search's AI Mode within Search Labs, further expanding its reach and functionality.
