Google Search uses AI to generate podcast-like summaries for better answers
Imagine having a personalized podcast summarizing the top Google Search results just for you. That's essentially what Google's new Audio Overviews feature aims to do. Instead of sifting through countless links, you can now ask Google Search for an AI-generated summary presented as a short audio clip, mimicking a conversational podcast with two hosts. Think of it as Cliff's Notes, but for the internet age.
While this isn't meant for simple queries like quickly checking a date, it shines when you need a more comprehensive, hands-free explanation. For example, if you're curious about the history and significance of a particular event, Audio Overviews can provide a detailed response compiled from the top search results. The feature uses Google Gemini models to synthesize information and create a more engaging audio experience, with two distinct voices building upon each other.
Think of it this way: Remember the days of listening to NPR while driving? Now you can get a similar experience tailored to your specific research needs. You can also adjust the volume and playback speed, giving you greater control over your listening experience. The feature even includes links to the original webpages used to create the summary, allowing you to delve deeper into the topic if you desire.
This isn't the first foray into audio summaries for Google. The technology was initially implemented within its NotebookLM tool. What's new is the expansion of Audio Overviews to the main Google Search interface. Furthermore, Google has been experimenting with making Audio Overviews more interactive within NotebookLM, allowing users to ask the AI hosts questions and explore specific topics in greater depth through a "Deep Dive" option.
To give Audio Overviews a try, you'll need to opt-in to the Google Labs feature on the Google website. Once enabled, you can experience a potentially transformative way to consume information from Google Search, turning research into a more engaging and accessible experience.
