Leak Reveals Grok Might Soon Edit Your Spreadsheets
Word on the street is that xAI, Elon Musk's AI venture, might be cooking up something pretty interesting. Based on leaked code, it looks like they're developing an advanced file editor for Grok, their AI assistant, and get this – it might even support spreadsheets! Now, why is this a big deal? Well, it suggests xAI is gearing up to compete with the likes of OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. These tech giants are all racing to embed AI copilots into our everyday productivity tools.
Imagine being able to chat with Grok while you're knee-deep in a spreadsheet, asking it to crunch numbers, generate charts, or even just double-check your formulas. That's the kind of integration xAI seems to be aiming for. According to reverse engineer Nima Owji, who initially leaked the information, users will be able to "talk to Grok and ask it to assist you at the same time you're editing the files!"
The Bigger Picture
While xAI hasn't explicitly laid out its grand strategy, they've been dropping hints here and there. Back in April 2025, they launched Grok Studio, a split-screen workspace designed for collaboration with Grok on various tasks, from document creation to code generation. They also introduced Workspaces, allowing users to organize files and conversations in one central location. This points to the company's overall goal.
Now, OpenAI and Microsoft have similar AI-powered tools, but Google's Gemini Workspace seems to be the closest competitor to what xAI is building. Gemini Workspace allows users to edit documents and spreadsheets while chatting with the AI assistant. However, there's a catch: it only works within Google's ecosystem.
It's still unclear exactly which file types xAI's editor will support, besides spreadsheets. Will they build an entire productivity suite to rival Google Workspace or Microsoft 365? Only time will tell. This new editor would represent a step towards realizing Elon Musk’s broader vision for X.
