Orb: A Better Internet Connection Monitor

Apps

For nearly two decades, Speedtest.net has been the go-to tool for assessing internet speed. However, Orb, a new application, offers a more nuanced perspective, moving beyond simple speed measurements to provide a holistic evaluation of internet connection stability.

Beyond Speed: Understanding Network Health

Developed by the founder and former CEO of Ookla, Orb addresses the limitations of traditional speed tests. It acknowledges that while speed is crucial, stability is equally important for a seamless online experience. The application measures key metrics including latency, packet loss, and jitter, alongside download and upload speeds, offering a comprehensive picture of network health.

Orb presents this data in an easily understandable format. It calculates a single score (above 80 indicates a good connection, 70-80 okay, below 70 problematic) based on responsiveness, reliability, and speed, measured over customizable intervals. This simplifies the often complex world of network diagnostics.

Proactive Issue Detection and Resolution

Should the Orb score fall below the optimal range, the application leverages large language models (LLMs) to provide clear explanations of potential problems and suggests practical solutions. This proactive approach empowers users to troubleshoot and resolve connection issues efficiently.

Broad Platform Compatibility and Future Developments

Orb boasts wide platform compatibility, with apps available for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux. Furthermore, installation guides are available for a range of devices, including Raspberry Pi and others, enabling continuous network monitoring. Future developments include a shared monitoring feature, allowing users to collaboratively track connection quality and receive instant notifications about any disruptions.

Orb's current freemium model is a testament to its commitment to accessibility. The developers aim to generate revenue by licensing the technology to businesses and internet service providers (ISPs), which will enable those organizations to leverage advanced analytics for more efficient network monitoring and management.
