PlayStation VR2 Price Drop: Good News or a Sign of Trouble?

Technology

Alright, gamers, let's talk VR. Sony's making a big move, and it's got everyone wondering what's going on behind the scenes. They're permanently dropping the price of the PlayStation VR2. We're talking a significant cut – down to $400 in the US, €450 in Europe, and £400 in the UK. Previously, you were looking at $550, €600, and £530, respectively.

That price drop also applies to the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle, meaning you can snag the headset and the game for the same lower price. This is a welcome change, especially since the PS VR2 has seen some discounts here and there lately. But this official price cut gives retailers more wiggle room to offer even better deals. Could we see it dip even lower in the future? Fingers crossed!

But here's the big question: Why the price cut now? Is this a sign that Sony's doubling down on VR, or is it... something else? The PS VR2 always felt a little pricey, especially when compared to the Meta Quest 3, which doesn't need a PS5 to run.

Sony has added hand tracking, but overall the situation it´s not perfect: the support seems lukewarm, and the big first-party studios aren't exactly churning out VR games left and right. Some, like the folks behind Call of the Mountain, have even faced layoffs recently.

So, is this price cut a final push to get the PS VR2 into more homes? Or is it a way to clear out inventory before potentially shifting focus? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: it makes getting into VR a little bit more accessible for PlayStation fans.
