Swedish PM Admits to Using ChatGPT: Is This the Future of Governance?

Technology

So, the Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, casually dropped that he sometimes consults ChatGPT for a "second opinion" on governance. I mean, really? It sounds like something out of a satire show!

Apparently, he's using it to see what others have done or if they should be thinking the complete opposite. As if governing a country is just another brainstorming session with a slightly-too-eager intern.

Of course, this didn't go down well. Virginia Dignum, a professor of responsible AI, pointed out that the more he relies on AI for simple stuff, the more overconfident he might get in the system. It’s a slippery slope, she says, and I totally agree. We didn't vote for ChatGPT, did we?

And it's not just her. Other sources chimed in, suggesting that running a country via chatbot isn't exactly the best move. One writer even said that AI mostly guesses and tells you what you want to hear, not what you need to hear. Which is spot on, I think. Imagine asking a chatbot leading questions and getting a sycophantic answer that just reinforces your own ideas. It's like having a yes-man, but in digital form.

Whether Kristersson's being serious or just trying to sound trendy by name-dropping ChatGPT, it highlights a worrying trend. We're increasingly outsourcing our thinking to AI, and that's got to have some consequences. I can only imagine how much more dull-witted we can all get.
