WhatsApp to Integrate Third-Party Chats in Europe Due to DMA

Technology

Big news for WhatsApp users in Europe! It looks like Meta is getting ready to roll out third-party chat integration. This is happening because of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to create a fairer playing field for tech companies.

Essentially, WhatsApp will soon allow you to exchange messages with people using other messaging apps. Meta claims this feature is launching "over the coming months". They also ensure WhatsApp’s strong end-to-end encryption (E2EE) will stay in place. That's a relief, because nobody wants their messages exposed.

Apparently, the first two apps to hop on board are called BirdyChat and Haiket. I'll be honest, I haven't heard of them either, and probably you too. But maybe this is the chance for smaller apps to grow!

If you're in Europe, expect a notification in your WhatsApp settings. You'll be able to choose whether to enable third-party messaging. Keep in mind that it'll work on iOS and Android, but not on desktop, web, or tablets.

Meta emphasizes that any third-party app connecting to WhatsApp needs to use the same level of end-to-end encryption. They also say they won't be able to see your encrypted messages as they're sent. You'll be able to send all kinds of content, including text, photos, videos, voice messages, and documents.

Just remember, this feature will only be available for WhatsApp accounts registered to phone numbers in Europe. Also, when Meta revealed a preview of what this integration would look like, they mentioned you'd be able to choose whether to keep third-party messages in a separate folder or mixed in with your regular chats. It seems like Meta will also be reminding you whenever a new third-party messaging app becomes compatible.

There is a caveat. Meta cautions that other apps might handle your data differently. So, it's something you will need to consider before enabling the feature.
