Windows 10 Extended Security Updates: Free with a OneDrive Catch!

Technology

So, Windows 10 is reaching its end of life, and Microsoft is offering a lifeline. But, as always, there's a twist! I remember when Windows XP support ended; it felt like the end of an era.

Basically, if you don't want to upgrade to Windows 11 just yet, you can get Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10. However, to get them for free, you'll need to enable Windows Backup. This means syncing your settings and folders to OneDrive.

Now, OneDrive gives you 5GB of free storage. If you're like me and have tons of stuff in your Documents folder, you might need to buy extra storage. That's the catch! Microsoft wants you to use their services, which, honestly, isn't a bad deal if you're already in their ecosystem.

If you're not keen on using OneDrive, you have two other options. You can pay $30 for a year of updates, or you can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Which, let's be honest, could take a while to accumulate!

Microsoft is adding an enrollment wizard in July, making it easier to choose your path. After that, you are automatically enrolled. Keep in mind that these extended security updates are only available until October 13th, 2026, for consumers. Businesses, however, can purchase up to three years of these important security updates.

It is also worth noting that Microsoft is making ESU free for Windows 10 devices that are accessing Windows 11 Cloud PCs through its Windows 365 and Virtual Machines.

It is clear that Microsoft wants everyone on Windows 11. With 2025 being called "the year of the Windows 11 PC refresh," they're definitely pushing for upgrades. While Windows 11 is popular among gamers, a significant chunk of Steam users are still on Windows 10. It is an understandable move considering all the novelties added. But, in my opinion, a more affordable solution could have been provided.

Expect to see more reminders about the end of support soon. Microsoft only has a few months to convince Windows 10 users to upgrade or switch. I would recommend that you consider your options carefully.
