X Unveils Chat: Encrypted Messaging with Enhanced Privacy Features
Okay, so X just dropped a new messaging system called Chat, and it sounds like they're really trying to up their privacy game. I remember when they first introduced encrypted DMs, then kinda put things on hold... glad to see they're back at it.
Basically, we're talking end-to-end encryption for messages and files. That's a good start! Plus, there's disappearing messages – which, let's be honest, are super handy sometimes. You can even block screenshots or get a heads-up if someone tries to sneak a pic. Who hasn't wanted that feature before?
However, it's not all sunshine and roses. The encryption doesn't cover message metadata, which is something to keep in mind. And, shockingly, X admits that they could potentially compromise your encrypted chats. That's a bit unsettling, isn't it? They say they're working on ways to verify message authenticity and device identity, so hopefully that'll ease some concerns down the road.
Beyond the privacy stuff, Chat also includes voice and video calls and file sharing. They're even planning on adding voice notes at some point. I think it’s great they are improving this tool, even though it has some flows.
Chat is available now on iOS and the web, and the Android version is supposedly coming soon. So, if you're an X user, it might be worth checking out if you're looking for a more secure way to chat.
