Apple Expands Self Service Repair to iPads
Apple's Self Service Repair program has expanded to include iPads, offering a significant step towards greater user control over repairs. Starting now, owners of select iPad models can access official parts, detailed repair manuals, and specialized tools directly from Apple. This empowers users to tackle repairs themselves, provided they possess the necessary skills and comfort level.
Diagnostic Support
Further enhancing the program, Apple has introduced web-based diagnostics. This tool allows users to test for common issues affecting the display, software, audio, camera, and Face ID functionality, offering step-by-step repair guidance for diagnosed problems. Previously, such diagnostic testing was exclusive to authorized service providers.
Supported Models and Parts
Initially, support covers the iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and the entry-level iPad (A16). Apple is supplying components including displays, batteries, cameras, and external charging ports for out-of-warranty repairs. The program, launched in 2022 for iPhones and Macs, represents a consistent expansion of Apple's commitment to user repairability.
Expansion of Repair Options
Beyond the direct-to-consumer program, Apple also recently launched its Genuine Parts Distributor Program. This allows independent repair businesses and professionals to source genuine Apple parts through third-party distributors, fostering a broader ecosystem of repair options.
