Threads Finally Gets Dedicated DMs
After nearly two years since its launch, the Threads app is finally testing a much-requested feature: a dedicated direct messaging inbox. The rollout, initially limited to Hong Kong, Argentina, and Thailand, marks a significant change for the platform.
A Long-Awaited Addition
While Threads offered some messaging capabilities through Instagram DMs, this workaround proved cumbersome and confusing for users. Sending a Threads post to an Instagram contact who wasn't on Threads resulted in compatibility issues. The need for a standalone direct messaging function had been consistently voiced by users.
Meta's Shift in Strategy
Previously, there was reluctance from Meta executives to develop a separate messaging system for Threads, favoring integration with Instagram's messaging system. This approach has now changed, with initial tests of a dedicated inbox. This new inbox will, for now, only support one-on-one chats, a more limited function compared to other platforms.
The gradual rollout suggests a cautious approach. While currently limited geographically, Meta plans to expand the feature to more regions soon. This development addresses a major user complaint, potentially enhancing user engagement and satisfaction.
